Here are some of the most common dog breeds that begin with the letter W. While there are many mixed breeds, we have compiled the most popular here.

There are tons of other dog breeds that start with the letter w. However, many are extinct or considered very rare. Others are hybrid breeds, which that list could go on and on depending on how they are bred.

Whippet

  • Purebred, Italian origin
  • Size: Large
  • Aggression: Low to moderate
  • Grooming: Easy, but lack of hair makes them cold
  • Temperament: calm, affectionate, playful, great for families, does not like small animals
  • Fun fact: They are built for speed and can run up to 37 miles per hour in short distances.

Welsh Terrier

  • Purebred, Wales origin
  • Size: Small
  • Aggression: Low
  • Grooming: High maintenance, needs professional groom occasionally but needs to be brushed daily – oddly enough, not a lot of shedding 
  • Temperament: playful, energetic, chases everything, needs daily stimulation
  • Fun fact: Welsh terriers will give you the “stink eye” if they are upset or displeased with you and their tail never curls!

Wetterhoun

  • Purebred, Netherlands origin
  • Size: Medium to large
  • Aggression: Low to moderate
  • Grooming: very low maintenance
  • Temperament: intelligent, skilled hunter and guard dog, loyal when trained, does not get along well with other animals or pets.
  • Fun fact: They love being in water and are considered a rare breed that almost died out during WWII.

Welsh Corgi

  • Purebred, Wales origin
  • Size:  Small
  • Aggression: Low to moderate
  • Grooming: Sheds heavily during certain seasons, frequent brushing helps with the double coat, bathe as needed
  • Temperament: intelligent, instinctive, stubborn, barks a lot, loves to eat, wants to please their owners
  • Fun fact: The Pembroke corgi is the most popular of this breed and is the official dog of Queen Elizabeth.

Whoodle

  • Cross breed, Wales origin
  • Size:  Small
  • Aggression: Low to moderate
  • Grooming: Sheds heavily during certain seasons, frequent brushing helps with the double coat, bathe as needed
  • Temperament: intelligent, instinctive, stubborn, barks a lot, loves to eat, wants to please their owners
  • Fun fact: They are a mix between poodles and Wheaten Terriers

Wirehaired Vizla

  • Cross breed, Hungarian & German origin
  • Size: Medium to large
  • Aggression: Low to moderate
  • Grooming: Low maintenance but has a thick coat to withstand cold temperatures
  • Temperament: devoted to owners, great for families and kid, defensive if threatened
  • Fun fact: This breed was reaching extinction during WWII along with the Vizla. Almost all records were lost.

Wolamute

  • Cross breed (Timber Wolf & Malamute), American Origin
  • Size: Large
  • Aggression: Low to moderate
  • Grooming: Brush once a week and only bathe as needed
  • Temperament: Normally friendly, still have wolf instincts, best for adults, not to be around small children or animals
  • Fun fact: They are one of the oldest wolf/dog breeds in the world.

Weimaraner

  • Purebred, German origin
  • Size: Large
  • Aggression: Low to moderate
  • Grooming: Their short coats shed year round, and it’s recommended they visit a groomer every 6-8 weeks.
  • Temperament: Excellent hunters, loves their owners, can be stubborn to train
  • Fun fact: Puppies are born with stripes that fade after a few days of being born.

White German Shepherd

  • Purbred, Canada, Europe, US origins
  • Size: Large
  • Aggression: Moderate
  • Grooming: Sheds a little constantly with heavier seasonal shedding
  • Temperament: loyal, fearless, loves their families
  • Fun fact: This breed is one of the smartest and must be trained from an early age or else they may be skiddish or aggressive towards their family.

Wirehaired Pointing Griffon

  • Purebred, Dutch origin
  • Size: Medium
  • Aggression: Low
  • Grooming: Sheds very little, must be brushed a couple times a week
  • Temperament: Intelligent, friendly, a great hunter, loves children
  • Fun fact: They are often described as amazing gun dogs.

Welsh Sheepdog

  • Purebred, Wales origin
  • Size: Medium to large
  • Aggression: Low to moderate
  • Grooming: Needs regular brushing, but even more care when the undercoat sheds
  • Temperament: Needs a job to do
  • Fun fact: Appearances can vary greatly, because they are bred for working dog instead of looks.

West Siberian Laika

  • Purebred, Russian & Siberian origin
  • Size: Large
  • Aggression: High
  • Grooming: Sheds moderately through the year but it a “naturally” clean dog and is considered low maintenance.
  • Temperament: Great watchdogs, hunters, and instinctive. Does not do well with other pets
  • Fun fact: Laikas are some of the most protective dogs in the world.

Welsh Springer Spaniel

  • Purebred, English origin
  • Size: Medium
  • Aggression: Low to moderate
  • Grooming: Easy to maintain, average shedder
  • Temperament: Good with children, needs to be socialized, wants to please but will not respond to harsh commands.
  • Fun fact: This breed was reaching extinction during WWII along with the Vizla. Almost all records were lost.

Westie (West Highland Terrier)

  • Cross breed, Hungarian & German origin
  • Size: Medium to large
  • Aggression: Low to moderate
  • Grooming: Low maintenance but has a thick coat to withstand cold temperatures
  • Temperament: devoted to owners, great for families and kid, defensive if threatened
  • Fun fact: Westies were originally bred for hunting but have turned into companion dogs.

Wirehaired Fox Terrier

  • Purebred, English origin
  • Size: Medium
  • Aggression: Low to moderate
  • Grooming: use a wired brush a couple times a week, low shedder, needs to be striped a couple times per year
  • Temperament: lovable, likes kids, if not trained has “small dog syndrome”
  • Fun fact: It’s one of the oldest terrier breeds and has a docked tail so if they wouldn’t come out from a fox’s burrow, the owner’s could pull them out by the tail.
